Copper Toxicity and IUDs

Copper IUDS

In mainstream gynecology, the copper IUD is known to be the only hormone-free IUD on the US market.

This IUD is inserted through the vagina and placed at the base of the uterus. The copper causes an inflammatory process, then acts as aspermicide making the uterine environment inhospitable to sperm so it can’t successfully fertilize an egg.

How Copper Works in the Body

Copper exists inside the body as an essential mineral at low levels without being harmful. A safe range for copper levels inside the bloodstream is 70-140mg per deciliter, and a low level of copper inside the body is needed for the function of joints, ligaments and bones.

Copper toxicity happens when these levels surpass the upper limit that is considered safe.

Copper Toxicity

Copper toxicity, or copper poisoning, causes symptoms such as headaches, fever, fainting, nausea, vomiting, blood in your vomit, diarrhea, black stools, abdominal cramps, brown rings in the eyes, jaundice, depression, anxiety and other mental health disorders.

Wilson’s disease, along with liver disease, thyroid issues, lymphoma, hepatitis, anemia, leukemia, and rheumatoid arthritis bring an increased risk of copper poisoning.

The bodily functions that help the human body to regulate levels of copper can also cause symptoms that are misdiagnosed as psychiatric disorders. This happens because when the body is over working to filter out excess copper by binding it in plasma to prevent it being absorbed by tissue, it makes it unable to perform its original functions effectively.

Patients Speak

While the current research says that copper toxicity from an IUD is unlikely in healthy patients without prior conditions, patients disagree and wish they had been warned about the risks before the copper IUD was inserted.

In some instances, patients have reported a subtle onset of depression that turns into suicidal ideations. This leads to psychiatric evaluation, antidepressants, and misdiagnosis in many cases.

Sadly, the diagnosis of copper toxicity is not found by the medical professional but the patient who traces the onset of symptoms to the insertion of the IUD. In most cases the solution is actually removing the IUD. Once the IUD is removed, patients report the symptoms resolved.

In other cases, the patient has to go through extensive treatment to remove the copper from the body. Chelation, the process of removing heavy metals from the body, uses a regimen of zinc, selenium, vitamin C, and Pecta Sol-C.
